Dickens Christmas Fair 2010
December Missive
#3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Notes from your Missive Maven:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks everyone for a wonderful first three weekends! We broke records all days but one!
One more weekend to go, so remember to pace yourself and bring protein bars and water in case you can't get through those busy food lines.
Quiet Near Stages!
Please watch your volume near the stages and environmental areas! The performers have worked very hard on their shows, don't break into one of their carefully crafted pieces with a street bit that could easily be done elsewhere. This is especially true during Mikado on the V&A between 1:30 and 2:45.
Weather -
Yes, it looks like we're going to have some stormy weather this weekend, so please plan accordingly.
Bring "brollies" to share between the green room annex and the fair buildings.
Bring jong johns to wear under your costume if it's cold. (I do)
Allow extra drive time to get to the Cow Palace in case other people don't drive well in the rain.
Yes, we're making plans too!
Especially to have a fabulous, drama free, closing weekend!
Please remember to contact the folks referenced in each notice below, rather than hitting "reply".
No Outside Alcohol - It Endangers Our Fair!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our event is granted a liquor license under very specific rules.  One of the rules is that there is no 'outside' alcohol allowed by customers AND participants.

Participants who bring alcohol to the event and consume it by themselves and/or share it, put our liquor license at risk.

Please, before you bring that beer, wine or liquor into the fair, remember that you could be endangering  our lovely playground. If the ABC see this happening, we will lose our liquor license!  Like any business, the Fair is a delicate balance of income and expense, and we depend on the income from our ale stands to help pay our bills, Without it, we won't have a fair. So please - do not bring in outside alcohol!

Thank you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last Day Pranks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please, if you "conscientiously feel it is your duty" to do some sort of last day prank, keep it period appropriate and theatrically valid.

If you can't do a prank that
#1 Is in period and doesn't break the illusion of Victorian England
#2 Is in proper costume and appropriate for your character
#3 Is not disruptive to the participants around you
#4 Adds to customer enjoyment, does not detract from it

Don't do it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Possible Traffic Issues: Doyle Drive to Park Presidio - Postponed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The closure  of the 101S to 19th Ave. on the 18th-19th and 19th Ave. to 101N this weekend have been postponed due to the rain and will be rescheduled in January. (They just now called me back... whew).

Stage Quiet Zones, Green Room Security, Fleece Jackets

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Teri Pope)
Notes from The Fair Stage Manager
Stage Quiet Zones:
Just a reminder that the area around our fixed theaters and environmental theater areas like the Green Man and Legion Fantastique are Major Quiet Zones!
Do NOT run your street gig, warm-up, or impromptu Jam Session near any of the theatres unless you have OK'ed it in advance with the director or stage manager.
Please respect your fellow performers and don't pull focus from the stage by being  noisy outside the theater. This is not polite to fellow performers or to our customers watching the show, and you will bring down the wrath of a stage manager  upon you!
Green Room Security:
Please do not try to sneak your non-participant friends into the Green Rooms or backstage areas. Our security does a great job  monitoring this, but occasionally may be called away. Just remember that, if  you sneak a buddy into the Green Room, and something goes missing from there,  that you are responsible because YOU let them in! So, just do the right thing
 and don't bring them in. Yes, this applies to YOU! :-)
Dickens Fair Fleece Jackets:
Two of you, a Ladye Katherine and a Mr. O'Golly, ordered fleece jackets. Please pick them up from the Ops trailer this weekend, and as soon as possible! They will NOT be mailed to you! So, if you leave them this weekend, I will take them! I always wanted to be a "Ladye!"
Have a great final weekend, take care of yourselves, and make it a great closing weekend!
Costumes: Closing Weekend Hours, Shop Needs,
Donations & Next Year
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Liz Martin)

It's That Time Already
I simply cannot believe that it is closing weekend already! Where did the time go? The streets of London have never looked as good as they have this season. Let's keep it up for closing weekend as well. Please remember that you should be wearing the costume that you were approved in and have worn for the past 3 weekends. Closing weekend is often full of pranks and costume switches. Please do not engage in this behavior. 'Nuff said.

Hours
We will be keeping normal hours this weekend, opening at 9 and closing at 7:30. Sunday might be a bit tricky, but we will do our best.
We will be collecting the long term rental fees on Sunday morning. If you happen to come by costumes to return an item and we are not there here's what to do. Please hang your items on hangers and hang them on the designated rack. If they are on multiple hangers, rubber band them together and put a note on them saying whose they are. Rubber-bands and tags will be on the table just outside the door.
Thank you for choosing the Dickens Fair Costume Shop for your costume needs.

Costume Shop Needs
And speaking of Costume Shop needs - it's time for our annual call for hangers! We thought we could make it thru but alas, we were wrong! we'd prefer plastic hangers but will take wire, especially the pants style. So check your closets and bring them on in!

Donations
And while you are checking the closets - are there any costume items that you would like to donate? or perhaps that you borrowed in decades pst and forgot to return? Drop those on by as well, we'd love to help you remove the clutter from your lives!

Looking Towards Next Year
If you would like to know as early as possible what the costume "hit list" will be for 2011, please send me an email to be put on the mailing list for classes and workshops. I know I have said this for the past two years, but this year there will be classes! To sign up, send an email to costumersstudio@gmail.com with "Sign me up" in the subject line

Venue Tear-Down Dates, Hours & Information

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Performers, please try and clean up as much of your area as you can after closing this Sunday evening. This would especially include small, breakable things, musical instruments, purses, wallets, etc. For those of you at stages, please clean up all the trash you find, even if it's not yours or that of your cast.
The V&A and Sal's stages evidently had quite a bit of trash backstage even days after closing, that other people had to clean up. Please take everything away that you brought in with you.
I am endeavoring to have dumpsters outside the V&A and Sal's stages, for your use.
Note: 9PM cutoffs may be extended to 10, but need to be approved by Genevieve.
Please note the following three important changes:
1. Stacks may not exceed five feet in height without approval from Kevin or Genevieve
2. The top of all loads must be perfectly flat, plywood or heavy wall flat preferred
3. No lumber in excess on eight feet in length can be incorporated into your stack. Any pieces longer than eight feet must be set to the side, properly labeled and approved by Kevin or Genevieve.
Scrooge/Martin Harris at The Freight & Salvage Dec. 21st 7:30PM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 (from Martin Harris)

I'd like to say a most sincere thank you to the whole cast for the love and care shown towards me this year regarding my personal situation and just say I find it most supportive and encouraging, all the prayers are well received, thankyou.

Having got slammed with a big legal bill for my immigration status there is one way that would help me is by attending the the special reading I'm booked for at:

The Freight and Salvage Dec 21st 7.30pm which is such a wonderful venue for this.

I also have the double cassette of my dramatic reading of the full unedited 3hr A Christmas Carol, a CD of the shortened version 1hour and twenty minutes and my very first DVD of the reading last year at The Freight and Salvage.   I'll have them at Fair this weekend.   They make a wonderful gift and last much longer than a box of chocolates!

Watch out for my Fools Jig at Sundays Blow Out show.

Again thanks for all your help and support.

God Bless Us, Everyone!

Martin

1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 (from Adam Hansen)
I came upon this free eBook via the Gutenberg Project today, and thought it might be useful, or at least interesting, to some of the lowlifes that inhabit the streets of our London.  It's the 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue by Francis Grose.
A Closing Quote from "A Christmas Carol"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(from Charles Dickens - via Therese Porter)

"There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,' returned the nephew. `Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round -- apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that -- as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"
